CLAYS FOR KIDS

Join us for lunch and a fun round of sporting clays. Our chapter is dedicated to two things. Raising money to continue buying and developing land in Minnesota for hunting and teaching young people how to shoot shotguns and hunt birds successfully. Nothing is more important to the future of outdoor sports than getting young people involved and outdoors. The funds we raise from this event is dedicated to the kids. Our learn-to-shoot program is free. We pay for all the shells, targets, and safety gear that the kids use. We even provide the shotguns! By participating in Clays for Kids, you are helping us get young people in the field. Come and join us!

2025 Adult Learn to Hunt Upland Birds Program

This program is intended to provide adults with no prior hunting experience the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of upland bird hunting to begin hunting confidently and effectively on their own. This program will take place over two weekends in the fall, plus an additional Saturday morning to hunt game farm birds. The first weekend will include two full days of activities and instruction.

Weekend One - Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club
Day one (Saturday) will include group introductions, instruction on shooting fundamentals, safety, and actual shooting. There will also be a dog handling demonstration so participants can observe the thrill of hunting with a canine companion.

Day two (Sunday) will include more practice shooting, an introduction to gun cleaning, and good gear selection, followed by field dressing and processing game instruction. Participants will also have the opportunity to taste several wild gamebird preparations, opening their eyes to the culinary potential of wild game.

Saturday game farm shoot. This weekend's class includes a chance to shoot pheasants at Horse and Hunt on Saturday, September 20th, from 9- 1 pm.  We pay for the birds. We provide the hunting loads. We put out three pheasants per student, and you will get to hunt over our dogs. Lunch is included at the end.

Weekend Two - Location to be determined:
The second weekend of the program will consist of a one-day hunt in Minnesota for wild pheasant, guided by program instructors. Additional instruction on habitat, cover types, game bird biology, and public access consideration will also be incorporated into the day.  The date for this event will be either Saturday, October 19th or Saturday, October 26th, depending on our sister chapter in Marshall, MN who host this day.

Additional program goals include:

  • Providing a safe, comfortable atmosphere where  adults with no prior hunting experience can learn to hunt

  • Provide an opportunity to meet other adult-onset hunters and experienced hunters who can be a resource beyond the program.

  • Develop an appreciation and understanding of the hunter's role in conservation and the importance of being a steward of the resource and habitat.

Requirements:

Dates and Start times:
Saturday, Sept 6th: 9:00 am to 5 pm
Sunday, Sept 7th: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Saturday September 20th: 9 am - 1 pm.
October wild bird hunt: Participants will convene at a location TBD at 8:00 am; hunting starts at 9:00 am. Participants are encouraged to arrange their own lodging on Saturday night and hunt on Sunday!

Youth Introduction to Wingshooting, Session #3

The Metro Area Chapter Wingshooting System is specifically designed to pass on the fun and excitement of wingshooting for youth by building five simple steps for success. Each of the steps moves seamlessly to the next and culminates in hitting more targets. The system is easy to use AND easy to remember! Each student will learn to properly shoot a shotgun. Our five-step system will teach students their dominant eye, establish foot position and appropriate posture, how to mount a shotgun, point at a target, concentrate on a target, and ultimately break a target. The system is designed to give the student the basics, so they feel comfortable carrying and shooting a shotgun before entering a field to hunt. In addition, our program provides the foundation for a student to advance his or her skills in a shooting sports program. We encourage students to come to all three sessions in order to broaden their skills.

2024 Five-Step Wingshooting Program

Introduction to Wing Shooting is FREE to all participants

Each session is limited to 24 students, and there is one session per Sunday.

  • Session 1: Sunday, May 19th / Noon - 2 pm

  • Session 3: Sunday, August 4th / Noon - 2 pm
